Do I need a sleep study?

Overnight sleep studies are important for the diagnosis and treatment of a certain group of sleep disorders. Many people who have these disorders often think they don’t have sleep problem because they fall asleep easily. Falling asleep is only the beginning; what happens after you fall asleep is at least, if not more important.

Do you or have you been told that you:

snore heavily?
have long pauses in your breathing while you sleep?
wake up gasping, choking, or short-of-breath?
often awaken with a headache that soon goes away?
fall asleep when you don’t want to (during meetings, at stoplights, driving, talking on the phone, etc.)?
feel tired in the morning, even after sleeping all night?
feel just as tired after sleeping eight hours as you would if you only slept six or less?
find your sleepiness affects your work or social life?
snore so loudly your sleep partner has moved to another room?

If you have checked two or more boxes, you may have a sleep problem that requires a sleep study for diagnosis and treatment.

There is increased cause for concern if you have, or at high risk for, heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity, or chronic respiratory disorders.
